Dear Regina,

The holiday season is often described as “the most wonderful time of the year” but for many of us it can feel more like a marathon of stress—balancing family commitments, endless to-do lists, and nonstop events.

Over the years, I’ve seen how the holidays can take a toll. Common complaints like exhaustion, tension, poor sleep, and digestive issues seem to surge during this time. It’s no surprise—our minds and bodies are deeply connected, and stress has a way of showing up in both.

But here’s the simple truth: it is possible to feel the joy and wonder of the holidays again. You don’t need to overhaul your life to make it happen; small, intentional habits can make a world of difference.

Here are my 10 simple practices to help you find calm and joy this season:

1. Take Frequent Breaks

When you feel the tension rising, pause for a few minutes. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and release any tightness in your shoulders or jaw. A quick reset like this can help your body shift out of stress mode.

2. Focus on One Thing at a Time

Instead of multitasking, pick one daily activity—whether it’s writing a card or enjoying a cup of tea—and give it your full attention. Slowing down, even briefly, can bring a sense of calm and mindfulness.

3. Set Boundaries with a “No” List

It’s tempting to say yes to everything during the holidays, but overcommitting only leads to burnout. Make it a habit to say no to at least one task or event each day. Protecting your time gives you space to savor what truly matters.

4. Create a Morning Ritual

Start your day with a calming ritual, like journaling, creating a plan for the day, reading, stretching, or sipping tea in silence. Even five minutes of mindful activity can set the tone for a peaceful day ahead.

5. Take a Nature Break

Step outside for a quick walk or simply breathe in the fresh air. Connecting with nature—even briefly—can reduce stress and help you feel grounded amidst the holiday hustle.

6. Give Yourself Permission to Rest

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is nothing at all. Commit to a day, an afternoon, or even just an hour, where you allow yourself to rest, watch a favorite movie, or take a long nap… completely guilt-free!

7. Let Music Soothe You

Create a playlist of your favorite calming or festive tunes and play it during stressful moments. Music can instantly boost your mood and bring you back to the present.

8. Declutter Your Space

Spend 10 minutes tidying up one area of your home. A clean and organized space can create a sense of calm and help you feel more in control during a busy season.

9. End Your Day with Gratitude

Before bed, think about one positive moment from your day. Maybe it was a kind word from a friend or a quiet moment with your family. Reflecting on these small joys can help you unwind and sleep more peacefully.

10. My Absolute Favorite Practice - Simplify Your Traditions

Give yourself permission to scale back on gifting, cooking, or hosting. For gifts, consider thoughtful alternatives like handwritten notes or experiences instead of material items. For meals, opt for a potluck-style gathering where everyone contributes a dish. Simplifying these traditions keeps the focus on connection rather than perfection, making the holidays more enjoyable for everyone.

These small shifts can help you reclaim the joy and meaning of the season without adding to your already full plate.

Remember, less is often more, and the holidays don’t have to be perfect to be magical. Focus on what truly brings you joy! How will you bring more calm and joy into your holiday this year? I’d love to hear which of these practices speaks to you—just hit reply and let me know!

Wishing you a holiday season filled with peace, happiness, and moments that matter most!
